The Great Island Trail on Great Island takes you along soft sand and wet sand, through pitch-pine forest, salt marsh and the sea. You can walk to the old tavern site. The tavern, built in the 1690, is long gone, but it once served whalers when whales were abundant near the shores of Wellfleet. Don't try to walk to Jeremy Point if the tide is rising-- it gets submerged at high tide. Not a place for a dog to run loose. There's about 8 miles of trails. Kids will love the hermit crabs scurrying in their borrowed shells.
