Duck Creek

, Wellfleet, MA, 02667

Put in at Wellfleet Pier and kayak up Duck Creek for a bit of history and a tranquil, easy ride along the salt marsh. In the 1800's this was one of three busy Wellfleet harbors. Schooners would load and unload at the piers on Commercial Street. The railroad that used to go to Provincetown is gone. The track that led to Dennis is now the Cape Cod Rail Trail. If you paddle inland you'll pass under Uncle Tim's bridge, a pedestrians-only bridge, rebuilt in 2008. You'll pass the First Congregational Church tower, whose bells ring out in ship's time. Two bells mean it's 1, 5, or 9 o'clock; four bells mean it's 2, 6, or 10 o'clock; six bells mean it's 3, 7, or 11 o'clock; eight bells mean it's 4, 8, or 12 o'clock. You might also see groups of fiddler crabs scuttling into their burrows. If the tide is high you can reach Route 6. The hill on your right is called Canon Hill, and it has a little walking trail.
